Caring for Your Dining Table: Wood, Ceramic, Glass and Stone-Effect Tops

2 min read

Whatever your table top is made of, here's how to clean it, protect it and keep it looking great at every meal.

Your dining table is where family life happens: breakfasts, homework, celebrations and everything in between. Different table tops need slightly different care, so find yours below. Some good habits apply to them all.

Good habits for every table

  • Use placemats, coasters and trivets under hot dishes, mugs and glasses.
  • Wipe up spills straight away, especially wine, coffee, oils and anything acidic like citrus or vinegar.
  • Lift plates and serving dishes rather than sliding them. Grit on the bottom of crockery can scratch almost any surface.
  • Keep your table out of strong, direct sunlight and away from radiators.
  • Lift the table to move it. Never drag it, especially if it's an extending table.

Wooden tables

Dust with a soft cloth and wipe with a barely damp cloth when needed, then dry straight away. If your table is oiled, re-oil it from time to time with the manufacturer's recommended oil. If it extends, open it out every so often so the leaves are exposed to the same light as the rest of the top and the colour stays even. Our wooden furniture care guide has more tips.

Ceramic tops

Ceramic is hard-wearing and easy to clean. For everyday cleaning, wipe with warm water and a little mild washing-up liquid, then buff dry with a soft cloth to avoid streaks. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals, and don't stand, sit or put very heavy objects on the edges, as ceramic is strong but can chip if knocked sharply at the edge.

Even tough surfaces last longer with a mat under hot pans. It protects the finish and your table's frame.

Glass tops

Clean glass with a soft cloth and a gentle glass cleaner or warm soapy water, then polish dry. Use felt pads under ornaments and avoid putting heavy or sharp objects down hard. If your table has a glass top on a frame, follow the fitting instructions carefully and check the fixings from time to time.

Stone-effect, marble-effect and faux concrete tops

These finishes give you the look of stone with easier upkeep. Wipe them with a soft, damp cloth and mild soapy water, then dry. Avoid bleach, abrasive cleaners and scouring pads, and wipe up oily or coloured spills quickly so they don't have a chance to mark.

Matching chairs and benches
