About Us

Since 1875, Woods Furniture has been part of the local furniture story in Dorchester. Established by George Wood, the business has grown from a family store into one of the South West’s leading independent furniture retailers.

"Despite our size and success, we still remain true to our original ethos: an independent, local retailer committed to delivering excellent value for money, a first-class range and outstanding customer care."

Our history

From a Single Family Store to Two Locations

Woods Domestic Stores were established in 1875 at 48 High East Street, Dorchester. By 1907, the business had expanded to 35 High East Street, where we still trade today.

At that time, one store offered a wider range of homeware including baskets and china, while the furniture store focused on furniture, flooring, and curtains. In the mid-1980s, the original 48 High East Street premises were sold and 35 High East Street was expanded to include number 34.

Around the same period, Woods became a member of the Association of Independent Stores, helping us combine independent service with the buying power to compete on range, service, and price.

Growing with the times

A Refreshed Showroom for Modern Living

In 2011, the High East Street store underwent a major refurbishment, marking an important new chapter for Woods. The showroom brought a more contemporary feel to the space while introducing a carefully selected mix of trusted brands, including Stressless, Neptune, Collins & Hayes, GPlan and Harrison.

Today, the showroom spans 10,000 square feet across four floors in the heart of Dorchester, giving customers plenty of room to browse and compare styles at their own pace. With free customer parking at the rear and a growing ecommerce offer, Woods continues to combine the convenience of modern shopping with the personal service of an independent retailer.

Brewery Square

A Contemporary Second Showroom

In November 2016, Woods at Brewery Square opened as a fresh, contemporary showroom in Dorchester. Designed to complement the original High East Street store, it gives customers another inspiring space to explore furniture and home accessories in a more modern retail setting.

The showroom showcases a stylish mix of products, including Woods own-label collections, helping customers discover pieces that suit a wide range of homes and interiors. Brewery Square also strengthens Woods’ presence in the town, offering even more choice and flexibility for customers looking for inspiration, quality, and design-led furniture
