Bed and Mattress Care Guide
Turning, airing and protecting your mattress, plus what to expect in the first few weeks with your new bed.
In this guide
A good bed is one of the best investments you can make in your wellbeing. Our beds and mattresses are designed to handle everyday life, and a few simple habits help you get the best night's sleep for the whole life of your bed.
When your new bed arrives
- Let it breathe. Once it's out of its packaging, leave your mattress uncovered for a few hours so any odours and condensation can escape. Keep the polythene well out of reach of children.
- Give it time. Your old bed may have been softer than you realised, so a new bed can feel a little strange at first. Allow a few weeks for your body to adjust and for the fillings to settle.
Settlement is normal
Modern fillings are more luxurious than ever, which means you may notice some settlement where you lie. This is completely normal and, as long as the mattress is properly supported, it can be kept to a minimum by turning and rotating it regularly.
Turning and rotating
For the first two to three months, turn and rotate your mattress once a week. After that, once a month is enough.
- If you have a two-sided mattress, flip it over and rotate it head to toe.
- If you have a "no turn" mattress with a single sleeping surface, just rotate it head to toe.
- Regular turning and plumping helps prevent dips and "nesting" in spring mattresses.
Everyday care
- Turn back the bedclothes each morning so your bed can cool down and air.
- Use a good mattress protector to guard against moisture and spills.
- Never use detergents or chemical cleaners on your mattress, as they can damage the fabric and stitching.
- Avoid sitting on the edge of the mattress for long periods, as it can affect the shape.
- Never fold or bend a mattress. It can damage the spring unit, and modern spring mattresses shouldn't be rolled for storage.
Divans, drawers and bed frames
Divan drawers are designed for lightweight items like bedding. As a guide, don't put more than 7kg in mini drawers or 15kg in standard drawers. For wooden bed frames, follow our wooden furniture care guide, and check and tighten the fixings every few months.
