Garden Furniture Care Guide
Keep your outdoor furniture ready for sunny days, with tips on cleaning, cushions, bad weather and winter storage.
In this guide
Garden furniture is built for the outdoors, but the British weather can be demanding. A little care through the seasons means your outdoor space is ready to enjoy the moment the sun comes out.
Regular cleaning
- Brush off leaves, dust and debris regularly. A soft brush works well in the weave of rattan-style furniture.
- Wipe frames and table tops with warm, mildly soapy water and a soft cloth, then rinse and let them dry.
- Avoid pressure washers, bleach and abrasive cleaners, which can damage finishes and weaves.
- Clear up bird droppings, tree sap and food spills quickly so they don't mark.
Looking after cushions
Bring cushions indoors or store them under cover when you're not using them. The covers won't be harmed by a shower, but the fillings can take a long time to dry out.
- If cushions do get wet, stand them on their edge in a dry, airy spot so they dry evenly.
- Never store cushions damp, as this can lead to mould and mildew.
- Check each cushion's care label before washing the covers.
Wind and bad weather
Lighter pieces, cushions and parasols can be caught by strong gusts. When high winds are forecast, move furniture inside or somewhere sheltered and close and store parasols. Outdoor mirrors should be fixed securely following the fitting instructions.
Winter storage
- Give everything a good clean and make sure it's completely dry before storing it.
- Store furniture in a dry shed or garage if you can. If it has to stay outside, use breathable, waterproof covers and raise the feet off wet ground.
- Don't wrap furniture in plastic sheeting that traps moisture.
Spring refresh
When the weather warms up, give everything a clean, check fixings and bolts are tight, and air your cushions before the first barbecue of the year. For more ideas, read Make the Most of Your Garden.
