Leather and Faux Leather Care Guide
How to clean and protect leather and faux leather sofas, chairs and dining benches, and what's normal as leather ages.
In this guide
Leather is a natural material that breathes, feels warm and develops a beautiful patina over time. Every hide is unique and may show natural marks such as scars, creases and growth lines. These add character and don't affect how well it wears. Faux leather gives you a similar look with easy-care practicality. Here's how to look after both.
What's normal for leather
- A relaxed look. Leather seats and backs naturally stretch and soften a little with use, giving a comfortable, lived-in look.
- Patina. Over time leather deepens in colour and character. Many people love it for exactly this reason.
- Zips. Where cushions have zips, they're there to help with making the piece and aren't meant to be undone.
Everyday care for leather
- Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth or the soft brush on your vacuum.
- For finished (pigmented) leather, wipe over with a cloth dampened in a mild solution of warm water and gentle soap, then dry it with a clean cloth.
- Never use household polish, abrasive cleaners or solvents, which can damage the protective finish.
- Plump cushions regularly so the shape stays even.
Keep leather away from radiators and direct sunlight. Heat and strong light dry leather out and speed up fading and cracking.
Spills and stains
Don't rub a spill, as this pushes it into the leather. Lift liquid off quickly using the edge of an absorbent paper towel, then dab lightly with a clean towel. Body oils and perspiration can also mark leather over time, especially on headrests and arms, so regular gentle cleaning of these areas really helps. Be aware that non-colourfast clothing, such as new denim, can transfer dye onto light-coloured leather.
Aniline, nubuck and suede
These natural-looking leathers have little or no protective coating, so they're more sensitive to marks and light. Use only care products specifically made for your type of leather, follow the instructions carefully and always test on a hidden area first.
Caring for faux leather
Faux leather, which we use on many of our dining benches and chairs, is wonderfully easy to live with. Wipe it with a soft, damp cloth and dry it straight away. Avoid harsh cleaners, solvents and sharp objects, and keep it out of strong sunlight and away from direct heat so the surface stays supple.
Avoiding surface wear
- Try not to sit on the edges of cushions or on the arms.
- Sharp objects such as keys, buckles and pet claws can scratch the surface.
- Use castor cups to protect carpets and wooden floors.
