Poppy's Top Six Interior Design Trends for 2018

Poppy's Top Six Interior Design Trends for 2018

Dorset interior designer, Poppy Lavarello, who works in house at Woods High East Street Store in Dorchester, has pulled together six inspiring 2018 interior design trends to help get your creative juices flowing. Poppy, who spent four years living on the Island Tristan Da Cuhna (in the South Atlantic Ocean) where she got inspired to train as an interior designer, says: ‘Its time to say bon-voyage to blush and bonjour to bold! As 2018 sees a move away from the minimalist living of the past, with a new no-rules maximalist and bold approach to styling up your home.’ Here are Poppy’s favourite six interior trends for 2018 to help you kick start the new year in style…

1. This Seasons Colours

Bold is beautiful. 2018 is set to inject statement colours into your home with this seasons colours of moody violets, burnt ochre, tomato reds and forest greens to feature heavily in furniture design, wall coverings and soft furnishings. Dare to be adventurous in 2018? Think opulent emerald chesterfield luxury leather sofas, and luxurious peacock blue velvet sofas, both mouth wateringly tasteful and ultimately stylish.

2. Succulent Plants

Stealing centre stage in 2017’s top interior design styles for plants were cacti, greenery and jungle prints. This year is all about accumulating layers in your home, with added emphasis on macramé plant hangers, patterned plants and air plants, creating a feeling of freshness and vitality. However, Poppy says: ‘don’t throw out last year’s house plants just yet, as this interior design trend continues to feature throughout 2018.’ The new year welcomes in this seasons plants whilst compassionately caring for the old!

3. Luxury Velvet and Leather Furniture

Sympathetically uniting with the rich colours of 2018, velvet and leather furniture are set to dominate home interior design styles this year. Velvet showcases jewel tones like no other! Consider adding this sumptuous combination to your living room furniture wishlist: a plush statement velvet sofa offset with a brass studded leather armchair. Create stunningly scrumptious layers and textures, with bedroom furniture accessories in macramé, wicker and metallic detailing.

4. Dark Wood Furniture

Take a walk on the dark side in 2018! As bleached woods, like Skandi which paved the way in interior design styles for 2017, move aside to make way for darker woods. Dark wood furniture will beautifully offset this year’s confident colour and textural interior trends. Be audacious as you take a trek into the deepest depths of the forest, with this season’s dark wood living room furniture – a dark wood sideboard or occasional table, positioned empathetically next to a forest green feature wall. Totally inspiring – as everyday living becomes an adventure with Woods!

5. Luxury Interior Design – More Metallics

Adding metallic touches to create luxury interior design finishes is nothing new. But, 2018 will see a move away from copper and rose gold, with brass poised and ready to shine! Sophisticated and timeless, brass will perfectly accentuate your soft pink traditional sofa as well as contemporary sofas in shades of grey.  Invest in a splice of grandeur in your contemporary interior design ideas, through positioning brassy metallic abreast of royal peacock and emerald jewel tones. Utterly opulent!

6. Forget minimalist interior design - More is More for 2018

2018 ushers the ultimate finale for minimalist living! Unsurprisingly, with all of the key interior design trends for 2018 lending themselves to the idea of colour, texture and pattern, this is the year that there will be a shift away from minimalist living allowing maximalism to step into the showroom. Dorset interior designer Poppy says: ‘Maximalism sets the scene for you to encourage personality back into your home, as it draws upon things that you already love to create an utterly unique space that has emotional appeal, because it is completely representative of your individuality’. The polar opposite of minimalist interior design, which requires constraint, maximalist interior design has a no rules approach! However, it does take some thought to balance an eclectic home mixture of bold patterns, textures, colours and knick-knacks in the same space, without creating the feeling of chaos or giving the appearance of clutter. Willing to take the 2018 interior design challenge?
